Join me in the fight against colorectal cancer!
Welcome to my fundraising site! On April 7th, I will join thousands of New Yorkers and transplants from all over the world in a 15K run to support the 10th Annual Colon Cancer Challenge. Through the challenge, our goal is to increase awareness and raise funds for colorectcal cancer treatment and prevention.
Anyone who knows me well knows I have not always been a runner. Admittedly, I used to hate running. However, about two years ago, with the encouragement of my (very) patient boyfriend and the Somerville Road Runners, I gave running another chance. And to my surprise, it was pretty fun! Through running clubs, I met a network of like-minded individuals who were not only passionate about physical and mental fitness, but also about promoting worthy causes through sport, from 5Ks to marathons, to Ironman triathlons! They are the inspiration that ignited my passion to join the fight against cancer, and my father is the fuel that propells it forward.
In August 2012, my dad was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. He is one of the lucky ones. With the help of chemotherapy, the love and support of his family, and pure unadulterated stubborness, he has been royally kicking its butt! (pun intended). Again, he is one of the lucky ones. Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer, but the second greatest cause of cancer-related deaths. When detected early, polyps can be removed before they become cancerous- making it one of these most treatable and curable cancers! However, many people don't go to the doctor for regular screenings because they either can't afford it, they are unaware of the risk, or they feel like they are better off not knowing. This is the reason we continue to raise awareness and funds.
The Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation (CCCF) has been working since 2003 to fund screening progams for the uninsured, and provide much needed funds to young investigators who are committed to finding a cure for colorectal cancer.
This year their goal is to raise $1 Million dollars. $1 Million dollars will allow CCCF to greatly enhance and expand it's awareness programs focused on encouraging the public to Get the Facts, Talk to their Family and Doctor about their medical history and risk factors, and Get Screened! All in an effort to spread the word that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable with prevention and screening. My personal goal is to raise $100 by April 9th as a birthday gift to my wonderful father, and $600 by June 16th, for Father's Day.
Please consider joining the national movement by supporting our common goal of ending colorectal cancer with a tax-deductible donation. You can make a donation online by clicking on the Donate button above my fundraising thermometer. Your support helps us get another step closer to a world without colorectal cancer.
Thank you for your support and please share our story with your friends and family!
